Miami Beach Centennial Fashion Show

Article Courtesy of Miami.Com

Breaking fashion records this month is none other than the city of Miami Beach.

A couple of weeks ago the city served as the backdrop for the world’s largest selfie as photographer Gray Malin snapped an aerial shot of over 1,000 women at the Mondrian Hotel for unisex brand Aerie.

Next, Miami Beach will make history for having the world’s longest catwalk on Sunday, March 22 through Thursday, March 26.

The 80-foot long raised runway will be built for daily fashion shows as part of the city’s 100-hour  Centennial  Celebration.

The public is invited to attend the free fashion shows as long as they RSVP.

Orchestrating the shows is fashion brand Funkshion. Aside from the shows, attendees can expect more.

“A Style Village will be created,” said Funkshion’s Special Project Manager  Natalija Dedic Stojanovic. “[It will be] a state of the art venue [also] housing musical performances and VIP parties all under one roof. “

Located in tents on Ocean Drive between 11th and 12th street, every evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. the Style Village will feature different designers.

Local designers like Simonette Pereira, owner of Style Mafia, and Liliana Montoya are participating with their own shows.

“It is truly an honor to be able to present during this event that so genuinely illustrates what’s coming out of Miami fashion at the moment,” said Pereira.

She said her new collection on Thursday, March 26 will incorporate various styles such as retro, funk and a minimalism.

“Expect to see fashion pjs and print on print,” said Pereira.

Also in the mix will be student designers from the Art Institute. Miami Beach Cinematheque will be treating festival goers to the documentary “Dior and I” before it hits the screens on April 10. And there will be lots of art.

“Art lovers will be able to catch the Artist Lounge,” said Stojanovic.  “Selected artists will be showcasing their multi-sensory projects.”

To RSVP e-mail MiamiBeach100@funkshion.com or Check out www.Funkshion.com for more information.

CGAF 2015

Press Release Courtesy of CGAF

MIAMI –
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – The 52nd Annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival® (CGAF) presented by Terra Group returns this Presidents Day weekend, February 14-16. Also right in time for Valentine’s Day, art lovers can once again rely on CGAF’s award-winning visual, culinary and performing arts to make them swoon, as it brings the most talented artists from across North America to Coconut Grove. Regarded as America’s most popular outdoor fine arts exhibition, artists from more than 47 U.S. states and Canada were among the nearly 1,000 applicants who submitted samples to CGAF in mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood.  Twenty-seven local artists from the Miami area and more than 110 from Florida were also invited to showcase.

A favorite component of the annual event, the Culinary Pavilion will again host top name chefs from the hottest restaurants and hotels in South Florida with demonstrations beginning every day at noon.  Highlighting this year’s culinary roster is Food Network champion Chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, Island cuisine master Chef Irie and Private Chef to the celebrities Richard Ingraham.

Yet, one of the biggest announcements for the Arts Festival this year is its partnership withMiami New Times. Programming the three days of live entertainment,Miami New Times will bring national touring acts to the main stage lineup in Peacock Park.

Headlining the list of eclectic groups ready to groove in the Grove include the self-described one-man “Island-infused, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Gospel-Ninja-Soul” band Zach Deputy; award-winning, psychedelic southern rock band Bright Light Social Hour; and the wildly unapologetic and kazoo-wielding Beebs & Her Honeymakers.

Finally, amateur painters can attend “Learn to Paint” workshops hosted by Jerry’s Artarama Miami and held daily at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Sculpture Garden; while the Children’s Trust Art Alley returns this year with an interactive Kids’ Area that encourages children, ages 2-12, to also express their imagination and creativity through hands-on workshops.

Festival hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission to the Arts Festival is $15 per person, per day.  Children 12 and under are free. Residents of Coconut Grove in the 33133 zip code can enjoy the Festival for a reduced admission of $5 (proof of residency required).

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) is produced by the non-profit Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association. Proceeds help fund year-round arts programs.  The association also maintains the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery and presents special exhibitions throughout the year from its location at the Mayfair in the Grove.

For more information, daily event schedules or to purchase tickets for the Coconut Grove Arts Festival online, visit www.CGAF.com.

Joey Bada$$, Talib Kweli, Pete Rock and Slum Village will be on hand for Dilla Day Weekend going down in Miami next month. The annual event, honoring J. Dilla, has expanded to three days, kicking off Feb. 5.

Besides extending to an entire weekend, this year’s celebration relocates down to Florida from its usual spot in the late producer’s hometown of Detroit. Dilla’s mother, Maureen Yancey (a.k.a. Ma Dukes), will host. “Dilla's music is timeless and lives in all of us," said Yancey. "I expect Miami to become the icon of event holders for the Dilla legacy, and raise the bar for events globally."

Dilla Day Weekend festivities include a producer’s panel, meet and greet and barbecue, plus live performances from the aforementioned names, as well as Black Milk, Esta, Camp Lo and music by “Miami’s finest,” the flyer states. More artists will be announced at a later date.

A limited amount of “early bird” tickets are on sale now via jdillaweekend.com

GLAMSQUAD App Launches In Miami

1/18/2015

Glamsquad Launches In Miami
Getting glam by a simple tap on your smartphone?

Yes, there’s an app for that, Miami. And its appropriately called GLAMSQUAD.

Now locals can book hair and/or makeup services in the comfort of their home, office or hote room through their easy-to-use on-demand app. “After a very successful beta launch in Miami during Art Basel, we are thrilled to announce that the GLAMSQUAD app is live in Miami,” GLAMSQUAD Co-Founder and CEO Alexandra Wilson says.

Wilson has a knack for online success. As the Founder of Gilt.com -- the definitive designer discount sale website — she is touted for revolutionizing the landscape of luxury e-commerce.

As for her latest get-gorgeous venture, Miami was a natural choice for GLAMSQUAD’s growth as it joins its existing sister cities of New York and Los Angeles. “There was no question Miami would be the next city on our list. Women here love to get dressed up and beautified,” Wilson says.

The most recent version of the app is available in the iTunes Store (www.glamsquad.com) and also features an appointment calendar that allows 28 day advance booking. Blowouts cost $50, braids cost $75, updos are $80 and up, and makeup application costs $75.

In regards to GLAMSQUAD’s genesis, it all commenced with Co-Founder Victoria Eisner’s aha! moment one New Years Eve when realizing that she could get everything she needed for a great night out — food, clothes, and car service — conveniently delivered to her door. But, unfortunately, not beauty services. With the help of her business savvy close friend, Jason Perri, the two of them set out to change this dilemma. And with aplomb.

Today, a total of 150 stylists and make up artists work for the app nationwide. GLAMSQUAD plans to expand across markets and new beauty verticals in the form of manicures and pedicures coming this winter.

Alas, beautiful hair and makeup is just a click away.

Ultra Music Fest Announces 1st Phase Lineup

1/15/2015

The New Year is here, and that means Miami Music Week (formerly Winter Music Conference, for not-so-old-schoolers) is on the horizon. And that, in turn, means the biggest electronic music event in the world is set to once again bombard the Magic City with banging, blissful bass and big beats.

Yes, the legendary Ultra Music Festival is back for a 17th year, sprawling across Bayfront Park in downtown Miami from March 27-29, bringing its annual who’s-who list of the world’s best DJs and EDM acts. And as has become custom in recent years, the lineup is simply too massive to lay on the party people  all at once – so Phase 1 has just been revealed.

Revelers from last year’s extravaganza who remember Dutch superstar Avicii being hospitalized for gall bladder problems and therefore missing his closing set at UMF will be happy to know that the Grammy-nominated DJ/producer is back in full force. He’ll once again man the Main Stage in support of his upcoming album “Stories,” which features collaborations with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Jon Bon Jovi, Serj Tankian of System of a Down, Wyclef Jean and Matisyahu.

Fans of the long-lost powerhouse trio Swedish House Mafia can somewhat rejoice, as two of its members, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, will make their UMF debut as a duo. Expect big-room, fist-pumping tracks from their upcoming album. SHM’s third member, Steve Angello, will perform on his own.

Also of note: Norwegian electronic duo Royksopp will hit the Ultra Live stage for the first time since 2011, in support of their appropriately titled final album, “The Inevitable End” (they say they’re not breaking up, however); South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord (“The Answer”) will make its UMF debut; bass bombers Krewella, Bassnectar and Netsky will tremble the earth with thunderous sets; and fan favorite Carl Cox returns for an 11th year hosting the manic Carl Cox & Friends tent.

Additional big names on Phase 1’s bill include (take a deep breath): Afrojack, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Deep Dish, Eric Prydz, Hardwell, Knife Party, Skrillex, Steve Aoki, Tiesto, Kygo, Porter Robinson, Art Department, Breathe Carolina, Adam Beyer, Alesso, Locodice, Jamie Jones, Nicky Romero, Martin Garrix, Eats Everything, Fedde le Grand, Guy Gerber, John Digweed, Joris Voorn, Laidback Luke, Paul van Dyk, The Martinez Brothers, Nic Fanciulli, Pete Tong, Sasha, Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, Umek and Zeds Dead, among dozens of others.

As mind-blowing as this partial lineup is, remember that it’s only Phase 1 – stay tuned for many more huge acts TBA.

For more info and to buy tickets (three-day general admission $449.95, VIP $1,149.95), check out www.ultramusicfestival.com.
