Three Miami-Dade hospitals (Baptist, Palmetto General, and Coral Gables) earned honors for providing high quality medical care, according to an annual report from The Joint Commission, the organization that accredits hospitals across the country for quality and patient safety standards.

Baptist Hospital of Miami, the flagship facility of the region’s largest healthcare system, Baptist Health South Florida, earned certification as a “comprehensive stroke center” — becoming the first hospital in the region and the second in the state to receive the distinction.

Hospitals designated as comprehensive stroke centers undergo on-site reviews to demonstrate they have the necessary technological infrastructure, such as advanced imaging and a neurointensive care unit, and trained staff to treat patients with the most complex strokes.

Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah and Coral Gables Hospital — both owned by Tenet Health, a for-profit chain of hospitals, outpatient centers and health plans — also earned Joint Commission recognition as “Top Performer on Key Quality Measures.”

Specifically, Palmetto General and Coral Gables were noted for excellence in the treatment of heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.

Attorney Wants More Benefits For Residents In Overtown Development Project.

10/13/2014

For years , a Miami city agency has sought to secure $60 million for a massive project in chronically impoverished Overtown. But now that the project is finally close to breaking ground, a local attorney is claiming the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) illegally failed to hire any local contractors.

"If you're going to take these properties and make hundreds of millions of dollars, you've got to give something back to the community," says Edduard Prince, the attorney.

The project will amount to a substantial overhaul for struggling Overtown: four new affordable-housing developments, three of which will also include retail spaces, as well as comprehensive refurbishment of existing housing units.

"These new developments will help to... drive the demand for goods and services," said CRA Executive Director Clarence Woods. "Small businesses and retailers will create an environment where more jobs will now be available in the community."

Woods's proclamation came after the agency closed on a $60 million loan with Wells Fargo on August 22. But that announcement came only after months of squabbling: In late 2013, county officials argued that an existing law capped its financial commitment to the city for the project, and for months the funding was delayed while the city and county sparred over commitments.

Prince filed a complaint against Woods and the CRA in July, alleging a breach of fiduciary duty because the agency contracted outside developers for the project. A magistrate recommended it be dismissed earlier this month, but Prince tells Riptide he plans on appealing. Prince isn't opposed to improvements, he says, but he thinks the new developments will lead to gentrification and higher rent prices. And he's concerned current Overtown residents will end up getting squeezed out.

"The face of Overtown is going to change, which is progress," he says. "But you have to give something back to these people that you're pushing out."

Prince doesn't expect any legal victories; his real motivation is to stir more conversation about how the project could better benefit current Overtown residents. "The purpose of these lawsuits," he says, "is for the community to have some type of benefit." Woods did not respond to a request for comment by Riptide.

Miami Voters Approve SkyRise Miami Tower for 2017 Completion.

New SkyRise Miami Tower Approved

SkyRise Miami, Miami SkyRise, Bayside SkyRise
SkyRise Miami, 430million dollar, 1,000-foot tower and future tourist attraction has been approved by Miami voters.

The public supported the 1,000-foot tower — coupled with a long-term lease extension for Bayside’s operator — by a roughly two-to-one margin. The vote gives developer Jeff Berkowitz approval to begin construction and triggers a $10 million upfront payment to the city of Miami.

At a campaign party held in a private room at the Hard Rock Cafe at Bayside, Berkowitz declared victory upon the release of only early and absentee voting tallies, which favored the agreement by more than 70 percent, according to CBS4 News partner The Miami Herald.

SkyRise will have a observation decks, a rooftop restaurant, nightclub, a "flying" theatre with aerial shots of the Miami skyline, an elegant ballroom, and two amusement-park rides similar to the Tower of Terror, SkyRise Drop and SkyRise Plunge.

It will be the second tallest tower in the United States after the 1,148-foot Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas.

Berkowitz calls the SkyRise project Miami’s Eiffel Tower.

He says he’s investing some of his own millions, and seeking much of the financing from foreign investors through Miami’s new EB5 financing center, which swaps visas for local investment.

Developers say the project will be complete in 2017 with construction due to begin at the end of this year.

SkyRise is subletting land from Bayside. Under the agreement with the city, if Berkowitz fails to build the tower, GGP would get a shot. Otherwise, the market’s lease will be renegotiated.
